शब्दचित्रं - रंगीबेरंगी

काही वर्षांपूर्वी मधुर भांडारकरनं दिग्दर्शित केलेला "फॅशन" हा चित्रपट बघण्यात आला. मधुर भांडारकरचे २-३ चित्रपट मी पाहिलेत. माझ्या मते त्याचा एक सेट फॉर्म्युला आहे.

१. एक कोणताही चटपटीत विषय निवडायचा.

२. त्या विषयाशी संबंधीत गेल्या ५-६ वर्षांत आलेल्या सनसनाटी बातम्या गोळा करायच्या. उदाहरणार्थ - "फॅशन"मध्ये आलेला कंगना राणावतचा भीक मागण्याचा सीन. मग त्या या ना त्याप्रकारे चित्रपटात घुसवायच्या.

३. ठरवलेल्या विषयाशी संबंधित सगळ्या "स्टिरिओटाईप" गोष्टी खच्चून भरायच्या. उदाहरणार्थ - "फॅशन"मधले सगळे पुरुष डिझायनर्स "गे" असतात, आणि सगळे "गे" पुरुष बायकीच असतात! "पेज थ्री" मधली सगळी मंडळी केवळ आणि केवळ त्याच जगात जगत होती.  त्यांना दुसरं काही आयुष्यच नव्हतं.

मी या चित्रपटाबद्दल जे काही वाचलं होतं, त्यामध्ये हा "स्टिरिओटाईप"चा मुद्दा सगळ्यांनी आवर्जून मांडला होता, पण त्या सीनमधून आपल्या भारतीय समाजातला एक भयानक "स्टिरिओटाईप" व्यक्त झालाय, तो कुणालाच खटकलेला मी पाहिला नाही.

मेघना माथुर उर्फ प्रियांका चोप्राची नैतिक आणि व्यावसायिक घसरण सुरु झाल्यानंतरचा हा सीन आहे. ती परत तिच्या आईवडिलांकडे जाण्याच्या जस्ट आधीचा. मेघना एका पार्टीमध्ये जाते, तिथे दारू आणि ड्रग्स घेते, डान्सफ्लोअरवर एका अनोळखी पुरुषासोबत लगट चालू करते, आणि पुढच्या सीनमध्ये जेव्हा ती जागी होते तेव्हा ती त्याच्याबरोबर हॉटेलरूममध्ये असते. तिच्या लक्षात येतं की आपण या अनोळखी व्यक्तीसोबत "झोपलो" होतो. तिला स्वतःचा प्रचंड तिटकारा वाटतो आणि ती तडक मुंबई सोडून घरी जाते.

बहुतेक सगळ्या प्रेक्षकांना यामध्ये काहीही गैर वाटलं नाही. "वन नाईट स्टॅन्ड" ही आपल्याकडे तशी तिरस्कारानं बघितली जाणारी आणि अनैतिक समजली जाणारी गोष्ट आहे. त्यामुळे हा भाग तिच्या नैतिक घसरणीचा भाग म्हणून मधुरनं  हुशारीनं वापरला आहे. पण त्याचबरोबर खास भारतीय प्रेक्षकांवर त्याचा जोरदार परिणाम होण्यासाठी त्यानं अजून एक बारकावा वापरला आहे. ज्या पुरुषाबरोबर मेघना झोपते तो एक आफ्रिकन काळा माणूस असतो . भारतीय प्रेक्षकांच्या भाषेत "कल्लू", एकदम "undesirable" मटेरियल! ती "अशा" माणसाबरोबर सेक्स करते! म्हणजे तिची चांगलीच घसरण झालीये! काही चॉईसच राहिला नाहीये!अर्थातच प्रेक्षक तिचा स्वतःबद्दलचा तिरस्कार समजून घेतात.

आता कल्पना करा की हाच वन नाईट स्टॅन्ड मेघनानं एखाद्या गोऱ्या माणसाबरोबर साजरा केला असता तर? निदान भारतीय प्रेक्षकांवर तरी एवढा त्याचा परिणाम झाला नसता ! मनातल्या मनात अनेक लोकांच्या दृष्टीनं तिचा हा नैतिक अपराध न होता तिची achievement झाली असती! गोऱ्या रंगाबद्दल आणि माणसांबद्दल भारतीय समाजात एकीकडे असणारी असूया आणि दुसरीकडे स्वतःच्या रंगाबद्दलचा न्यूनगंड सगळं बॉलीवूड व्यवस्थित वापरून घेतं. मग आपले नायक २०-३० गोऱ्या एक्सट्रॉ बायकांच्या घोळक्यात युरोपातल्या कुठल्यातरी शहरात समूहनृत्य करतात आणि तमाम पुरुष प्रेक्षकांचा अहं सुखावतो. बघा बघा आपले हिरो कसे गोऱ्या बायकांना नाचवताहेत!

त्याचवेळी काळ्या रंगाबद्दलचा आणि लोकांबद्दलचा तिरस्कार या अशा प्रसंगांतून ठळकपणे समोर येतो. आपल्या चित्रपटांमधले गुंड आणि दुष्ट लोक सहसा काळेच असतात. पौराणिक कथांमधले राक्षस काळेच असतात. अपवाद विभीषणासारखे राक्षस, जे सुष्ट शक्तींची मदत करतात! ज्या "अमर चित्र कथा" वाचत आम्ही मोठे झालो आणि पुराण आणि इतिहास शिकलो त्यामध्येही सगळे देव गोरे आणि राक्षस काळेच असायचे. इंग्रजांनी हे ओळखून हुशारीनं उत्तर-दक्षिण,आर्य-द्रविड फूट पाडण्याचं राजकारण केलं, आणि आजपर्यंत आपल्या राजकारण्यांनी त्याला खतपाणी घातलं.

आता आपल्या न्यूनगंडाला खतपाणी घालायचं काम फेअर अँड लवली सारख्या कंपन्या करतात. भारतात सौंदर्यप्रसाधनांच्या मार्केटमध्ये गोरं बनवणाऱ्या (म्हणजे तसा दावा करणाऱ्या) क्रीम्सचा वाटा अक्षरशः हजारो कोटींचा आहे!

जेव्हा मी प्रथम परदेशी गेलो (आणि तेसुद्धा "ओरिजिनल" गोऱ्यांच्या देशात!) तेव्हा इतर सर्व लोकांप्रमाणे मलाही या लोकांच्या गोऱ्या रंगाबद्दल उत्सुकता होती. पण जेव्हा मी या लोकांना जवळून पाहिलं तेव्हा आपल्या "ब्राऊन स्किन" ची किंमत मला समजली! या लोकांची गोरी त्वचा अत्यंत नाजूक असते. त्यावर बरेचदा अनेक डाग असतात. फार थोड्या लोकांची आपल्यासारखी नितळ त्वचा मी पाहिली. आमच्या प्रोजेक्टमध्ये काम करणाऱ्या एका माणसाचे थोड्या उन्हात गेला तरी कसे हाल व्हायचे ते मी पाहिलंय. आपल्या दृष्टीनं कोवळ्या असलेल्या उन्हानं सुद्धा त्याची त्वचा भाजलेल्या बटाट्यासारखी झालेली होती.

या गोऱ्या लोकांमध्ये त्वचेच्या कॅन्सरचं प्रमाणही बरंच असतं. कारण त्वचेला संरक्षण देणाऱ्या मेलॅनिनची कमतरता. आपल्यामध्ये ते भरपूर असतं. हयू जॅकमन या X-Men चित्रपटांत "वूलवेरिन" चा रोल करणाऱ्या अभिनेत्याची आत्तापर्यंत स्किन कॅन्सरची सहा ऑपरेशन्स झाली आहेत. हे एक उदाहरण झालं.

तिकडे लोकांना आपल्यासारख्या ब्राऊन त्वचेचं आकर्षण असतं. त्यासाठी ते तासनतास बीचवर उन्हात बसून त्वचा टॅन करतात, पैसे देऊन ultraviolet चेंबरमध्ये अंगावर रेडिएशन घेतात. आणि आपण आपल्याला आयत्या मिळालेल्या गोष्टींची किंमत न ठेवता फेअर अँड लवलीचा धंदा वाढवत बसतो!

गोऱ्या लोकांनी जगावर राज्य केलं ते त्यांच्या वंशाच्या श्रेष्ठत्वामुळे नाही, तर त्यांच्या तंत्रज्ञान आणि विजिगीषू वृत्तीच्या जोरावर. काळे आणि आपल्यासारखे लोक त्यांचे गुलाम झाले त्यामध्ये कुणाच्या रंगाचा कोणताही वाटा नव्हता हे आपण विसरलो. आजही हिटलरचे गोडवे गाणाऱ्या आपल्या समाजातल्या काही लोकांचा असा गोड गैरसमज आहे की हिटलरला अभिप्रेत असणारा आर्यवंश आणि आपला सो-कॉल्ड आर्यवंश सारखाच आहे.

खरंतर आपला आर्यवंश ही ब्रिटीश लोकांनी निर्माण केलेली कल्पना आहे, आणि हिटलरच्या मते असलेला आर्यवंश हा फक्त गोऱ्या लोकांचा होता. त्यामध्ये भारतीय लोकांना काडीची किंमत नव्हती. पण लोकशाहीमध्ये करण्यासारखी सगळ्यात सोपी गोष्ट म्हणजे लोकशाहीला नावं ठेवणं आणि हुकूमशाहीचे गोडवे गाणं!

ज्या दिवशी आपण आपल्या रंगाच्या न्यूनगंडातून बाहेर पडू आणि सर्व प्रकारच्या आणि सर्व वर्णाच्या लोकांमध्ये सौंदर्य बघू शकू त्यावेळी आपण खऱ्या अर्थानं आपली भारतीय संस्कृती आत्मसात केली असं अभिमानानं म्हणता येईल.

A few years ago, I happened to watch the Bollywood movie Fashion, starring Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranavat, and directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. 

I have watched a few of Madhur Bhandarkar directed movies and have observed a recurring formula:

1            -- Select a subject with big controversy potential (Fashion, Jail, Page 3 etc)

2            -- Find out the sensational news about the chosen subject in the past few years / decades, for example the begging scene by Kangana’s character, or her wardrobe malfunction in Fashion. Then make sure all these sensational parts are included in the movie, one way or the other.

3            -- Find out all stereotypes related to the subject and make sure these stereotypes are included. For example, all male fashion designers are gay and effeminate, all Page 3 celebrities are fake inside-out and they have zero awareness of outside world etc.

The reviews / comments I read about the movie Fashion have never failed to mention these stereotypes. However, all of them ignored the vilest stereotype indicated in one of the turning points in the movie. And I have not met anyone who noticed it while watching.

The scene I found very offending occurs during the period when Meghana Mathur, the character played by Priyanka in the movie, is on a rapid downward spiral in her personal and professional life. Meghana gets inebriated in a party and starts flirting with a stranger on the dance floor. In the next scene, she wakes up next to the guy in his bed in a hotel room. She realizes that she had just slept with this total stranger, and hates herself for stooping so low. She immediately packs her bags and gets back to her hometown.

Most of the spectators did not find anything offending in this scene. One Night Stand is still a frowned upon concept in most parts of India. So, the director used this scene cleverly to indicate the sense of moral decline in the protagonist’s life. But he used one more trick in the Bollywood cinema book, which work wonders in emotionally manipulating Indian audience! The guy with whom Meghana had sex was a black African origin guy. In other words, in the view of the Indian audience, he was undesirable, unsexy, Kallu guy! Her moral decline is prominently highlighted in the Indian mindset because she had sex with “such a person”.  

Now imagine if Meghana was shown to have woken up next to a Caucasian (white) guy next to her. Would most Indians see it as a moral decline or a conquest? The director is very much aware of our unhealthy attraction for white skin and our inferiority complex / hate for dark skin. He manipulates these feelings in abundance to convey his point. This is the same gimmick that drives our brown skinned male actors to gyrate on the tunes of copied western songs in western cities flanked by white western extras. These scenes serve a dual purpose. Catching eyeballs of brown and dark-skinned males eagerly devouring the Caucasian girls with their eyes, and soothing their inferiority complex by the seemingly dominating position of the male protagonist over these white females.

At the same time, our movies keep no stone unturned in vilifying the dark skin. Almost all villains, goons, monsters in the popular culture are dark skinned. All demons in the mythological TV serials are dark skinned, except some demons like Ravana’s brother Vibhishan, who eventually defected to the good side! Even the Amar Chitra Katha comics, which was our main link to learning about our culture, showed all demons as dark skinned and almost all Gods as fair skinned. The British rulers understood and cleverly used this feeling against Indians to create one more division based on skin color (as if we did not have enough divisions like religions, castes and languages to fight over!). They cleverly sowed the seeds of Aryans vs Dravidians struggle, which is still a ripe fruit for politicians to pluck and devour!

If the moviemakers and politicians are making hay while the skin color is a hot issue, why would the industrialists stay behind? Companies like Fair and Lovely are minting billions riding the Indians’ unhealthy obsession with white skin.

When I went abroad the first time (that too, in the “original” Firangi land), I had curiosity, just like most of the Indians, about the white skin of those people. But up close, I really understood the value of our brown skin. Sometimes, we take things given to us by birth for granted, including our brown skin. The white skin that we are so obsessed about is very sensitive and often, freckled and spotty. Rarely I saw the smooth, spotless skin that so many of us have. I have seen some people around me turning beet red even with a mild sun exposure, so sensitive was their skin.

The white skin is also more prone to skin cancer due to lack of melanine, the skin pigment responsible for protecting us from harmful ultraviolet rays. Hugh Jackman, a celebrity actor, who plays Wolverine in the X-Men movies, has undergone six surgeries for skin cancer treatment.

While we struggle to get a lighter skin, the people with lighter skin spend billions every year to tan and darken their skins! There’s a huge market in western countries for tan creams and UV tanning chambers. People flock to the beaches and sunbathe for hours in blistering heat, to achieve a brown skin, and we help companies like Fair and Lovely make billions because we hate our sturdy, resilient, beautiful brown skin!

Westerner ruled the world in twentieth century not due to their skin color, but due to their technological advances, focus and determination to win at all cost. We did not become their slaves due to our skin color, but due to our divisions, internal politics and short term vision.

I feel depressed when I see some so called educated people around me who profess that Hitler was our Aryan brother. Aryans is a concept created by and propagated by the British rulers to advance their “divide and rule” agenda. As per Hitler, the true Aryans did not include anyone who did not have white skin and a very specific set of facial and bodily features. His concept of Aryans never included Indians. So get over it already!

The day we let go of our complex about our skin color and learn to see beauty in all skin colors, we can call ourselves evolved and embracing the true Indian culture.
