भावनिक अलर्ट - जर तुम्हाला हा सिनेमा परफेक्ट वाटला असेल आणि त्याच्या चिकित्सेनं तुमचं मन दुखावणार असेल तर इथेच थांबा.
अजून थांबलायत? छान. करायचं चालू?
मागच्या आठवड्यात उरी - द सर्जिकल स्ट्राईक हा चित्रपट पहिला. त्यातील काही प्रसंगांनी अंगावर रोमांच उभे केले (उदाहरणार्थ उरीच्या हल्ल्याचा प्रसंग). काही प्रसंगांनी रडवले सुद्धा (उदाहरणार्थ मेजर करणच्या मुलीनं त्याच्या रेजिमेंटच्या युद्धगर्जनेसह त्याला वाहिलेली श्रद्धांजली). यातले कमांडोज खरेखुरे भासले. काही ऍक्शन सीन खूपच भावले.
पण...
काही प्रसंगांमध्ये तद्दन फिल्मीपणा आणण्याचा मोह लेखक आणि दिग्दर्शकाला आवरता आला असता तर हा सिनेमा किती उंचीवर पोचला असता हा विचार सतत मनात येत राहिलाच.
१. मेजर शेरगील सुमारे १ वर्ष कारकुनी काम करत होता. कंमांडोज ज्या प्रकारच्या कठीण प्रशिक्षणातून रोज जातात त्यापासून तो तब्बल एक वर्ष लांब होता. पण त्याच्या वैयक्तिक सूडाच्या हौशीपायी त्याला सरळ त्या कमांडोजच्या टीमचा लीडर बनवून पाठवण्यात आलं.
२. कॅप्टन सरताजने एका टॉप सीक्रेट मिशनची माहिती सहजपणे शेरगिलला दिली. त्याबद्दल त्याच्यावर कोणतीही कारवाई झाली नाही. उलट सगळी रेड टेप बाजूला करून मेजर शेरगिलला सर्जिकल स्ट्राईकचा नेता म्हणून पाठवण्यात आलंच, याशिवाय त्याच्या शिफारशीवरून सिरतला त्याची हेलिकॉप्टर पायलट म्हणून पाठवण्यात आलं!
वरील गोष्टींकडे लेखक-दिग्दर्शकाचं कलास्वातंत्र्य म्हणून थोडावेळ कानाडोळा करूयात. पण तरीही काही गोष्टी टोचत राहिल्याच.
शेरगिलच्या टीमचा दुसरा हल्ला संपेपर्यंत सगळं मस्त चाललं होतं. पण नंतर चांगलीच माशी शिंकली!
दुसरा हल्ला संपेपर्यंत मेजर शेरगिलला समजतं की उरी हल्ल्याचा मास्टरमाईंड इद्रिस हा कुठेतरी लपलेला आहे. याच वेळेस साधारण डझनभर पाकिस्तानी पोलीस तिथे येण्याच्या बेतात असतात. शेरगील त्याच्या टीमला तिथून पोलीस येण्याच्या आत निघून जाण्यास सांगतो आणि स्वतः इद्रीसचा खात्मा करतो. त्यानंतर पोलिसांच्या तावडीत सापडण्याआधी तो पळ काढतो, त्याच्या टीमला जॉईन होतो, आणि ते सगळे LOC पार करून भारतात परत येतात.
यामध्ये काय खटकलं? सगळंच!
१. पोलीस येण्याची खबर लागताच मेजर शेरगील त्याच्या टीमला तिथून पळून जायला सांगतो. काय गरज होती याची?
शेरगिलकडे वीस कसलेले कंमांडोज होते. या लोकांनी काही वेळेपूर्वीच पन्नासेक दहशतवाद्यांचा जीव घेतला होता, स्वतःचं काहीही नुकसान न होऊ देता. या सैनिकांकडे आधुनिक हत्यारं, night vision goggles हे सर्व होतं. याउलट तिथे येणाऱ्या पोलिसांकडे जुनी हत्यारं, कमी प्रतीचं प्रशिक्षण आणि कदाचित पूर्ण निरुत्साह होता. त्यांचा या सैनिकांपुढे काय टिकाव लागणार होता?
२. आता क्षणभर असं समजू की या पोलिसांना मारून टाकून उगाच रक्तपात करण्याची शेरगिलची इच्छा नव्हती. पण त्यांना न मारता रोखणं कठीण होतं का?
शेरगिलच्या टीममध्ये निष्णात नेमबाज होते. पोलिसांची वाहने त्यांच्या इंजिनांमध्ये गोळ्या मारून निकामी करणं आणि मग ५-६ कमांडोजनी गोळीबार करून त्यांना रोखून ठेवणं सहज शक्य होतं. पोलिसांना ना त्यांचा पाठलाग करता आला असता, ना कुमक मागवताआली असती (कारण या लोकांनी आधीच वायरलेस जॅमर्स लावले होते).
३. आणि टीमला पळून जायला सांगून मेजर शेरगील काय करतो? तर हिरो बनायला एकटाच पिस्तूल घेऊन इद्रीसला मारायला जातो. जाता जाता वाटेतले CCTV कॅमेरे उडवण्यात गोळ्या वाया घालवतो!
४. इद्रिस कॉम्पुटर रूममध्ये एकटा होता. त्याचा धीर कधीच संपला होता. त्यानं लपून बसण्याचेही कष्ट घेतले नव्हते. दाराकडे रायफल रोखून तो अंदाधुंद गोळ्या झाडत होता. अशावेळी पाच-सहा कमांडोजनी सर्व बाजूंनी घेरून काही सेकंदांत त्याचा सहज खात्मा केला असता. इद्रीसला मारण्यापेक्षा त्या कॉम्पुटर रूममध्ये असलेल्या सगळ्या हार्डडिस्क ताब्यात घेणं महत्वाचं होतं. त्या हार्डडिस्कसवर दहशतवाद्यांबद्दलच्या माहितीचा खजिना मिळू शकला असता. एवढंच नव्हे तर कदाचित कारवाई करणाऱ्या कमांडोजचे चेहरे CCTV कॅमेऱ्यांनी टिपून तिथे रेकॉर्ड केले असण्याची शक्यता होती. त्यामुळे त्या हार्डडिस्कस खूप महत्वाच्या होत्या.
आणि शेरगिलने काय केलं? स्वतःचा जीव उगाच धोक्यात घालून इद्रीसवर एकट्यानं हल्ला केला. त्यात जवळ जवळ जीव गमावला, आणि कोणताही डेटा गोळा करण्याचा प्रयत्नही त्यानं केला नाही. पोलिसांपासूनही तो थोडक्यात सुटला. ते पोलीस बावळट निघाले म्हणून, नाहीतर त्याची टीम मागून पोलीस, वरून पाकिस्तानी हेलिकॉप्टर, आणि बाजूनं पाकिस्तानी मशिनगन अशा कात्रीत सापडले असते.
५. शेरगिलच्या टीमच्या नशिबानं पाकिस्तानी हेलिकॉप्टरमधल्या गनरची नेमबाजी अगदीच बंडल होती. त्यामुळे उघड्यावर धावणाऱ्या एकाही सैनिकाला एकही गोळी लागली नाही. शेरगिलच्या हेलिकॉप्टरवर क्षेपणास्त्रे डागण्याच्या तयारीत असणारे पाकिस्तानी रडार ओपेरेटर्स पण अचानक झोपी गेले. भारतीय हेलिकॉप्टर पाकिस्तानी हेलिकॉप्टरवर आणि त्यांच्या बंकर्सवर गोळीबार करत असताना ते निवांत बसले होते!
६. आणि भारतीय हद्दीत आल्या आल्या सगळ्यांनी आपल्या बेसवर पोचण्या आधीच एवढा जोरदार जल्लोष करून टाकला!
आता आपण फक्त आशा करू शकतो की भविष्यात कदाचित हिरोगिरी सोडून वस्तुस्थितीवर भर देणारा एखादा युद्धपट आपल्याला बघायला मिळेल.
Uri: The Surgical Strike – Why Major Shergill should face a court martial!
Spoiler alert – If you haven’t watched this movie yet and plan to watch it, there are spoilers ahead. Tread at your own risk.
Emotional alert – This article is about some gaping plot holes in the said movie. If you are too attached to the movie, stop reading now.
Still here? Okay, let the rant begin!
Last weekend, I watched Uri: The Surgical Strike. I was really impressed with the execution of some of the scenes. The commandoes looked authentic, their body language was on the mark, and the emotion factor was just right. The scene when the terrorists storm the Uri base was full of adrenaline. It was frustrating and fascinating at the same time.
The scene when Major Karan’s daughter plays her tribute to her late father by rousing the war cry made me cry (and no… I am not ashamed of admitting that I did cry during that scene).
However, I could see some gaping plot holes post interval which kept nagging me long after the movie fever had subsided. Honestly, I think these could be avoided in the interest of making the film more realistic and less filmy!
Let’s look at the following facts:
a. Major Shergill was assigned to a desk job for one full year before the surgical strikes. He should be in no physical and psychological condition to even participate (forget in the capacity of mission leader) for such an important strike. The commandoes he was leading into the battle have to be in a peak condition before they can be deemed ready for such operation.
b. Major Shergill’s friend (Capt Sartaj) casually discloses one of the most top-secret missions to him, without facing any consequences.
c. Major Shergill not only secures his transfer to the field within a couple of days, but also displaces the existing team leader of the Para SFs, manages to close the investigation on Seerat, and get her as the pilot of his chopper!
Let’s overlook these logical gaps for the sake of storytelling and director’s freedom to tell a story.
The movie was going quite well (and authentic) until the second attack by Major Shergill’s team ends. After that, it just went downhill.
Shergill realizes that Idris, the mastermind of the Uri attacks, is still at large, and decides to go after him. By this time, about a dozen policemen are converging into the location of the terrorist base. So Shergill tells his commandoes to make a run before the police arrive, then confronts Idris and kills him. Then they make back to the Indian side of LOC without a single casualty.
What’s wrong with this picture?
A lot.
a. When the strike team realizes that police are coming towards them, Major Shergill tells them to make a run for it. Why? What was the need?
This was a team of twenty elite, highly motivated commandoes, with the finest weapons and night vision goggles. They had already killed more than fifty highly trained terrorists without a single casualty. And they ran away from a dozen poorly trained, poorly armed and possibly, very poorly motivated policemen?
Let’s assume that they did not want more blood on their hands. But they could have scared them away. A couple of well-placed shots by the snipers would have easily disabled their vehicles. Some suppressing fire would keep the policemen in line, while the team made a run for it. The commandoes had already deployed wireless jammers, so there was no way these policemen could call for re-enforcements.
b. Not only did Major Shergill got separated from his team, but he left his rifle behind. Then he went to confront Idris with a pistol in hand. He wasted several bullets busting the CCTV cameras, which only served the purpose of disclosing his location to Idris.
c. Idris was alone in the data center. He was clearly panicked, since he did not even bother to conceal himself, and started blindly firing at the door. The best plan of action would be to surround him using a team of 5-6 commandoes, blind him using a couple of flash-bangs and take him out instantly. Instead, Major Shergill decided to play hero and kill him in a hand-to-hand combat (which he nearly lost). Not only this, he decided to shout out the fact that he was sent by Indian army at the top of his voice (The mission was supposed to be a secret until the political leadership decided to disclose it!).
d. Major Shegill was keenly aware that there were CCTV cameras shooting everything that was happening. Shooting down these cameras did not serve any purpose other than some stress release for him. The real problem was that the feed from these cameras may have been recorded in the hard drives of the computers in the data center. This feed must have captured the faces of many of the commandoes. It had certainly caught the face of the Major. The priority should have been to capture these hard drives. They may have contained much more valuable intel. Major Shergill did not even look at them. He spent all his time and energy killing Indris for his personal vendetta. Then he almost got himself captured by the policemen. He also gave away the direction his commandoes went. Fortunately for him, the policemen were too dumb to give him chase. Otherwise his team would be caught in a crossfire.
e. They were again fortunate that the chopper that chased them had a real bad excuse for a gunner in it. They were sitting ducks in the open, and that man could not even get one bullet to find its mark!
f. They were lucky the third time, because the radar operators at the Pakistani side decided to play dumb when the Indian chopper crossed over to their side and fired on their bunkers and their chopper. They were ready to blow this chopper out of the sky just a few hours ago. But this time, when the chopper was actually causing damage to their assets, they decided to turn a blind eye to it.
g. And as soon as the commandoes crossed over to the Indian side, they started making all the commotion they could make, without even bothering to reach the safety of their base!
I hope we would see some war movie in the future which manages to be authentic till the end!
