Nation (?) First!

Just two months ago, I was in Kargil and Leh. I met soldiers of Indian army there, who work in some of the most challenging conditions in the whole world.

On a tall mountain peak in Leh, there's a huge sign which is visible from every corner of Leh. The
same sign is prominently displayed at the entry point of each regiment (and there are a lot of regiments in Leh).

The sign simply says ... "Nation First"!

This sign is the guiding light by which each solider lives and dies.

When I visited Leh, I felt huge respect, admiration and pride for these men.

Now I think these men are the biggest fools of our country!

Why?

Because they are risking their precious lives for such undeserving fools like us, who live by the slogan "Surname first" and "Surname last"!

P.S. - Before you discount yourself from the above description, ask yourself this (no need to answer me) -

How many of you had a sneak peek at MY surname before you made an assumption in your head whom I was favoring / berating?

"Who" is saying something is now unfortunately more important that "what" he/she is saying!

Rebirth and Perspective

Today’s life is all about constant unpleasantness, irritation and always wanting more, never being satisfied or grateful. Ask anyone if they are satisfied in their lives, jobs, schools, and all you will get are complaints. No one is grateful for what they have, instead looking at others and ruing what they lack.

If anyone tries to defy the norms and think positive, the sheer force of negativity from media and people around them forces them to toe the negative line.

But sometimes, life sends us such jolts, that we are forced to introspect –  whether our so called big problems are really that big, or if we are making them big? And if one jolt is not enough to hammer this concept is us, life gives us more jolts till we wake up.

I got such jolts twice in last one month alone, and gave me a perspective that only life (and possibility of death) can. It made me realize that my problems are much smaller than they appear.

First jolt:

A month ago, I was travelling to Pune airport with my son. Both of us were sitting in the backseat of a cab, which was supposed to take us by 3:00 am to Pune airport for our 5:00 am flight. The roads were practically empty at these wee hours, and the cab was cruising at a comfortable speed of 50-60 kms. I was already feeling sleepy, and Dhruv was already asleep.

The cab reached Bung Garden road, and kept cruising till the end of the road, where a group of policemen had set up a barricade. They were inspecting random vehicles passing by. The barricade blocked half the road, making sure every vehicle slowed down near it.

However, our cab driver did not seem to be in mood to slow down, as he kept driving without braking, and before I could react, the cab had crashed head-on into the barricade. The impact was such that the barricade was thrown off five to ten feet, after which, thankfully, the driver stopped.

By this time, the stunned policemen came rushing towards us, and ordered everyone to get out. After deciding that we did not resemble any criminals / terrorists, they questioned us about where we were going. At this point, I realized that our cab driver had dozed off at the wheel.

What if the police had not set up that barricade on that night? Our cab, instead of colliding with the stationary (and harmless) barricade, may have crashed into a truck, or a bus, or another car. It could have mowed down a pedestrian, or a biker. It could have been in any of these scenarios, none of them pretty. I was very, very thankful to the universe that night.

However, getting out of this unscathed had its side effects. After the trip, the incident was forgotten, the usual pressures of office, home and life took over. Cribbing on tiny problems became a way of life, yet again. And then life came back to give me the second jolt!

Jolt 2:

Last week, about 9:00 pm. It was raining heavily, and the traffic was bumper to bumper. I was driving home from office in a car. I reached near a newly constructed flyover, which is hardly half a kilometer from my house. Adjacent to the flyover is a narrow road, which runs parallel to the flyover from below. Whether one drives over the flyover, or on the road below, the distance and time to reach my place hardly differs.

The flyover and the road are divided by a 3-4 feet stone divider before they part ways.

That night, as I reached near the flyover, I observed that it was very crowded, while the road below was nearly empty. So, I decided to skip the flyover, showed indicator, and turned on to the narrow road.

As the car entered the road, I increased the speed, since the road was deserted. Unknown to me, in the anticipation to get home, I had taken a more-than-necessary steep turn, resulting in the rear left tire of the car bumping against the road divider. As I sped on, I felt a crunch of the tire hitting the divider, followed by sudden tilt of the car.

I suddenly had a very sick feeling in my stomach when I realized that the car was now running on only its right-side wheels! The left side of the car had completely come off the ground and was tilting to the right side at an alarming rate.

At that time, seatbelts I was wearing made a life and death difference. If not for seatbelts, I don’t know how and where I would be flung. As I braced for the coming impact, much to my relief, the car suddenly tilted left and hit the asphalt extremely hard, completely jolting me inside and out. Just as I had entered the road, the car had hit a railing on the right side, killing the momentum of the tilt to the right side.

As the car hit the road, the front left tire burst with a bang, and it suddenly stopped. The whole ordeal must have taken less than five seconds, but it was enough to shake me to the core.

A crowd had gathered by then. People helped me get out and stand on my very shaky legs. After confirming that all my parts were still present where they are supposed to be, I was extremely relieved to know that no one else was hurt either.

Then the head took over, and I checked the car. The suspension was damaged and the tire (and alloy wheel) were beyond repair. There was no way anyone would be able to drive it. So I called the toe service and had it delivered to the garage. By the time the toe vehicle drove away, and the paperwork was done, it was midnight.

I came home completely exhausted, physically as well as mentally. But I was happy to be alive, and in one piece. It took me more than two hours to fall asleep even after so much exhaustion.

I woke up refreshed the next day, yet again thankful to the universe.

I don’t know why, but all the problems, pressures and stresses of life suddenly felt insignificant now!

(Censor board and the Dumb Audience)

Last week, I had the good fortune of going to multiplex with (my own) wife to watch a Hindi movie. If one tries to infer why people now-a-days prefer watching movies at home rather than cinema halls, it will be a long list. Some definitive reasons include loud mobile ringtones, equally loud fellow cinemagoers and the open loot of our hard-earned money, right from the multiplex parking to the multiplex food.

However, the thing that bothered me while watching the movie last week was none of the above. If you didn’t notice what I am going to tell you now, I apologies for spoiling your viewing experience. But I will tell it anyway!

Let’s first understand two important concepts. These are extremely important to understand why and how we enjoy our entertainment. First concept is “Breaking the fourth wall” and the second is “suspension of disbelief”.

A long time ago, when there was no film, the primary source of entertainment was the live shows which happened in towns and villages. These shows were performed on a stage, which had a rear wall (wall # 1) and right & left wings (wall # 2 and 3). The actors pretend that they do not see the audience, while the audience watches the plays / performances through “the fourth wall” which separates them from actors. It’s as if the audience watches the events in the play without the knowledge of the characters involved.

Regardless of whether we consume a show or a movie via our tab, computer, mobile phone, TV or cinema hall, the concept of this fourth wall remains the same.

Sometime, this fourth wall is breached by an actor by choice. It may be done simply as a gimmick, or due to demand of the story / screenplay. For example, a comedian / anchor may directly interact with audience, asking questions, or demanding applause. But an actor is always conscious of the fact that the fourth wall is always present and breaching it is his/her choice.

The second important concept is “suspension of disbelief”. It means the willingness of the audience to keep aside the knowledge that whatever is happening on screen is an act, and believe it as reality for the duration of the act. Suspension of disbelief gives us the ability to get involved in the act, to identify with the characters, to enjoy their triumphs and cry with their sorrows. The most successful directors have mastered this art of imbibing the suspension of disbelief in their audiences.

So let’s come back to the movie I watched last week and the reason for my ire.

There were dozens of scenes in that movie involving smoking and drinking. Cigarette smoking is fairly common now-a-days and not a big deal anymore.

I have never smoked in my life and I still do not understand why people find smoking so fascinating. Frankly, I don’t care whether someone smokes or not, as long as they do so with their own money and not involve me in passive smoking. However, I am pretty sure there’s no one out there in this era of information explosion who is unaware of the ill effects of smoking. If anyone smokes, it’s because of their choice, not because of lack of awareness.

But what triggered my ire?

Wherever there was a smoking scene in the movie, a warning would appear in the lower right hand corner of the screen … “SMOKING KILLS”. It’s a common sense to understand that everyone in the audience, smoker or non smoker, is aware of this fact. They need not be told this again and again. The one who smokes will surely ignore this warning. The one who does not, need not see this warning. So what’s the point of showing this on screen? The only purpose it serves is momentarily breaking the fourth wall and bringing audience out of their suspended disbelief. This automatically breaches their emotional involvement in the movie. And this just keeps happening.

Does the censor board think that audiences are so dumb? Don’t they realize that the only purpose their forced education efforts serve is diluting the moviegoing experience of the audience? People go watch the movies to forget themselves in another reality, and the censor board is hell bent on educating them even in the other reality! I won’t be surprised if censor board mandates the “KISSING INVOLVES EXCHANGE OF BACTERIA” warning in the kissing scenes in future movies! No wonder people prefer to download movies and watch them at home!
