सेन्सॉर बोर्ड आणि मठ्ठ प्रेक्षक! (Censor board and the Dumb Audience)

मागच्या आठवड्यात (स्वतःच्या) अर्धांगिनीसोबत एक हिंदी चित्रपट पाहण्याचा योग आला. लोकांना आजकाल चित्रपटगृहात जाऊन सिनेमे बघायला का आवडत नाही याच्या कारणांची यादी काढायची झाली तर हि हातभर लांब होईल. सारखे अवेळी वाजणारे मोबाईल फोन, घशात मुसळ कोंबल्याप्रमाणे "कुजबुजणारे" लोक, मल्टिप्लेक्सच्या पार्किंगपासून खाद्यपदार्थांपर्यंत चाललेली आपल्या पैशांची लूट ही काही प्रातिनिधिक कारणं. पण मला irritate करणारी मुख्य गोष्ट म्हणजे त्या चित्रपट पाहण्याच्या अनुभवात आपल्या महान सेन्सॉर बोर्डाची चाललेली लुडबुड!

मला परवाचा चित्रपट बघताना जी गोष्ट वारंवार खटकत होती तिची कदाचित बऱ्याच लोकांनी कधी नोंदही घेतली नसेल. त्या समस्त मंडळींची मी आधीच माफी मागतो. कारण पुढचं वाचल्यावर आता तुमचीही दर वेळी या मुद्द्यावरून चिडचिड होईल हे मला माहित आहे ... असो.

तर माझा मुद्दा मांडण्याआधी आपण "ब्रेकिंग द फोर्थ वॉल" आणि "suspension of disbelief" ह्या संकल्पना आधी समजून घेऊया. फार फार वर्षांपूर्वी, म्हणजे सिनेमा हा प्रकार जुना होण्याआधी गावोगावी आणि शहरोशहरी मनोरंजनाचं मुख्य साधन म्हणजे स्टेजवर होणारी नाटके. काही अपवाद सोडले तर नाटक या प्रकारामध्ये काही भाग अगदी तसाच राहिला आहे. उदाहरणार्थ स्टेज आणि विंगचा भाग. प्रेक्षकांच्या बरोबर समोर स्टेज असतं आणि उजव्या, डाव्या बाजूला विंगा. या सगळ्या सेटअपमुळे होतं काय, तर स्टेजवरील कलाकार आणि समोर बसलेले प्रेक्षक यांच्या मध्ये जणू एक अदृश्य भिंत तयार होते. स्टेजवरील कलाकार स्टेजच्या मागचा पडदा (भिंत क्र १), उजव्या आणि डाव्या बाजूच्या विंगा (भिंत क्र २ आणि ३) यांच्या मध्ये परफॉर्म करत राहतो, आणि प्रेक्षकही चौथ्या अदृश्य भिंतीमधून नाटक अनुभवतात. ही अदृश्य भिंत स्टेजवरच्या कलाकारांना प्रेक्षकांपासून वेगळं ठेवते. जणूकाही प्रेक्षक त्या नाटकातील पात्रांच्या नकळत त्यांच्या आयुष्यात डोकावून बघण्याचा अनुभव घेत असतो!

आता टीव्ही, कॉम्पुटर, टॅबलेट, मोबाईल किंवा सिनेमाहॉलचा पडदा यातील कोणत्याही ठिकाणी आपण कुठचाही शो किंवा सिनेमा बघतो तेव्हाही हि चौथी भिंत कलाकार आणि प्रेक्षकांत असतेच.

अर्थात कधीकधी कथेची गरज म्हणून, कधी गिमिक म्हणून, तर कधी प्रेक्षकांना नाटकात सामावून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न म्हणून काही कलाकार जाणूनबुजून हि चौथी भिंत भेदून टाकतात. उदाहरणार्थ एखादा कलाकार सूत्रधार म्हणून डायरेक्ट प्रेक्षकांशी संवाद करेल, तर कधी प्रेक्षकांकडून हशा आणि टाळ्यांची दिलखुलास मागणी करेल. पण असं करताना कलाकाराला हे भान नेहमी ठेवावं लागतं की त्याच्या आणि प्रेक्षकांमध्ये ही चौथी भिंत कायम असलीच पाहिजे, आणि ती भेदणे किंवा भक्कम ठेवणे ही त्या कलाकाराची निवड असते.

दुसरी संकल्पना म्हणजे "suspension of disbelief". यामध्ये प्रेक्षक राजीखुशीने आपला अविश्वास बाजूला ठेवून समोर चाललेल्या नाटक वा सिनेमाला खरं मानतो. काही काळासाठी ही समोर चाललेली कथा काल्पनिक आहे हे विसरून तो त्यात रममाण होतो. त्यातल्या पात्रांच्या सुखदुःखात स्वतःची भावनिक गुंतवणूक करतो. जेवढा हा "suspension of disbelief" तगडा, तेवढा त्या कलाकृतीचा impact जास्त. त्यामुळे प्रत्येक लेखक-दिग्दर्शक सर्वाधिक आटापिटा करत असतो तो प्रेक्षकांनी त्यांच्या पात्रांना खरं मानावं याचा.

तर आता परवाच्या सिनेमावर परत येऊयात.

तर या सिनेमामध्ये दारू पिण्याचे आणि सिग्रेटी फुंकण्याचे मोप सीन्स होते. आजकाल सिगारेट फुंकणारी लोकं नाक्यानाक्यावर दिसतात. सिगरेट पिणं ही आजकाल चोरून करायची गोष्ट राहिली नाहीये.

मी स्वतः कधी सिगारेट ओढली नाही, लोक ती का ओढतात हे मला समजलेलं नाही, आणि जोवर त्या सिगारेटचा धूर मला घ्यावा लागत नाही तोवर त्यांनी (त्यांच्या पैशांनी ) कितीपण सिगारेटी ओढल्या तरी त्यावर माझा कोणताही आक्षेप नाही. पण एक गोष्ट नक्की आहे की सिगारेटी ओढणाऱ्यांमध्ये असा / अशी कुणीही नसेल जिला सिगारेटचे दुष्परिणाम माहित नाहीत. तरीही ते फुंकत असतील तर तो त्यांचा चॉईस आहे , अज्ञान नाही.

पण यात माझी चिडचिड व्हायला काय झालं?

तर सिनेमामध्ये कधीपण सिगारेट फुंकण्याचा सीन आला कि स्क्रीनच्या उजव्या बाजूच्या खालच्या कोपऱ्यात एक सूचना झळकायची "SMOKING KILLS". आता साधा कॉमनसेन्स आहे ... जो माणूस सिगरेट फुंकतो त्याला आणि जो नाही फुंकत त्यालापण हे आधीच माहित आहे. जो सिग्रेटी फुंकतो तो हि सूचना बघून फुंकायचं थांबणार नाही. ज्याला फुंकायचं नाही त्याला तसंही सिनेमामधला सीन बघून काही फरक पडत नाही. या सूचनेनं फक्त होतं काय तर प्रेक्षकाला समोरच्या सिनेमापासून क्षणभर detach व्हायला होतं. ती चौथी अदृश्य भिंत क्षणभर भेदली जाते, प्रेक्षकांच्या suspension of disbelief ला तडा जातो  आणि प्रेक्षकाची त्या सीनमधली  भावनिक गुंतवणूक आपोआप कमी होते.  आणि हे सतत होत राहते.

सेन्सॉर बोर्डाला प्रेक्षक एवढे मठ्ठ वाटतात का? सगळीकडे सगळ्यांना अक्कल शिकवण्याच्या नादात कलाकृतीच्या अनुभवाला आपण नख लावतोय हे कुणालाच समजत नसेल का? मुळात आपल्या रोजच्या समस्या विसरण्यासाठी, एका कथेमध्ये हरवून जाण्यासाठी लोक सिनेमाला जातात, तर तिथेपण लेक्चर! नशीब ... अजून चुंबनदृश्यांमध्ये "KISSING INVOLVES EXCHANGE OF BACTERIA" च्या सूचनांची सक्ती केली नाहीये! मग लोकांनी सिनेमे डाउनलोड करून पाहिले तर त्यांचा काय दोष?

Last week, I had the good fortune of going to multiplex with (my own) wife to watch a Hindi movie. If one tries to infer why people now-a-days prefer watching movies at home rather than cinema halls, it will be a long list. Some definitive reasons include loud mobile ringtones, equally loud fellow cinemagoers and the open loot of our hard-earned money, right from the multiplex parking to the multiplex food.

However, the thing that bothered me while watching the movie last week was none of the above. If you didn’t notice what I am going to tell you now, I apologies for spoiling your viewing experience. But I will tell it anyway!

Let’s first understand two important concepts. These are extremely important to understand why and how we enjoy our entertainment. First concept is “Breaking the fourth wall” and the second is “suspension of disbelief”.  

A long time ago, when there was no film, the primary source of entertainment was the live shows which happened in towns and villages. These shows were performed on a stage, which had a rear wall (wall # 1) and right & left wings (wall # 2 and 3). The actors pretend that they do not see the audience, while the audience watches the plays / performances through “the fourth wall” which separates them from actors. It’s as if the audience watches the events in the play without the knowledge of the characters involved.

Regardless of whether we consume a show or a movie via our tab, computer, mobile phone, TV or cinema hall, the concept of this fourth wall remains the same.

Sometime, this fourth wall is breached by an actor by choice. It may be done simply as a gimmick, or due to demand of the story / screenplay. For example, a comedian / anchor may directly interact with audience, asking questions, or demanding applause. But an actor is always conscious of the fact that the fourth wall is always present and breaching it is his/her choice.

The second important concept is “suspension of disbelief”. It means the willingness of the audience to keep aside the knowledge that whatever is happening on screen is an act, and believe it as reality for the duration of the act. Suspension of disbelief gives us the ability to get involved in the act, to identify with the characters, to enjoy their triumphs and cry with their sorrows. The most successful directors have mastered this art of imbibing the suspension of disbelief in their audiences.

So let’s come back to the movie I watched last week and the reason for my ire.

There were dozens of scenes in that movie involving smoking and drinking. Cigarette smoking is fairly common now-a-days and not a big deal anymore.

I have never smoked in my life and I still do not understand why people find smoking so fascinating. Frankly, I don’t care whether someone smokes or not, as long as they do so with their own money and not involve me in passive smoking. However, I am pretty sure there’s no one out there in this era of information explosion who is unaware of the ill effects of smoking. If anyone smokes, it’s because of their choice, not because of lack of awareness.

But what triggered my ire?

Wherever there was a smoking scene in the movie, a warning would appear in the lower right hand corner of the screen … “SMOKING KILLS”. It’s a common sense to understand that everyone in the audience, smoker or non smoker, is aware of this fact. They need not be told this again and again. The one who smokes will surely ignore this warning. The one who does not, need not see this warning. So what’s the point of showing this on screen? The only purpose it serves is momentarily breaking the fourth wall and bringing audience out of their suspended disbelief. This automatically breaches their emotional involvement in the movie. And this just keeps happening.

Does the censor board think that audiences are so dumb? Don’t they realize that the only purpose their forced education efforts serve is diluting the moviegoing experience of the audience? People go watch the movies to forget themselves in another reality, and the censor board is hell bent on educating them even in the other reality! I won’t be surprised if censor board mandates the “KISSING INVOLVES EXCHANGE OF BACTERIA” warning in the kissing scenes in future movies! No wonder people prefer to download movies and watch them at home!
