Today’s life is all about constant unpleasantness,
irritation and always wanting more, never being satisfied or grateful. Ask
anyone if they are satisfied in their lives, jobs, schools, and all you will
get are complaints. No one is grateful for what they have, instead looking at others
and ruing what they lack.
If anyone tries to defy the norms and think positive, the
sheer force of negativity from media and people around them forces them to toe
the negative line.
But sometimes, life sends us such jolts, that we are forced
to introspect – whether our so called
big problems are really that big, or if we are making them big? And if one jolt
is not enough to hammer this concept is us, life gives us more jolts till we
wake up.
I got such jolts twice in last one month alone, and gave me
a perspective that only life (and possibility of death) can. It made me realize
that my problems are much smaller than they appear.
First jolt:
A month ago, I was travelling to Pune airport with my son.
Both of us were sitting in the backseat of a cab, which was supposed to take us
by 3:00 am to Pune airport for our 5:00 am flight. The roads were practically
empty at these wee hours, and the cab was cruising at a comfortable speed of
50-60 kms. I was already feeling sleepy, and Dhruv was already asleep.
The cab reached Bung Garden road, and kept cruising till the end of the road,
where a group of policemen had set up a barricade. They were inspecting random
vehicles passing by. The barricade blocked half the road, making sure every
vehicle slowed down near it.
However, our cab driver did not seem to be in mood to slow
down, as he kept driving without braking, and before I could react, the cab had
crashed head-on into the barricade. The impact was such that the barricade was
thrown off five to ten feet, after which, thankfully, the driver stopped.
By this time, the stunned policemen came rushing towards us,
and ordered everyone to get out. After deciding that we did not resemble any
criminals / terrorists, they questioned us about where we were going. At this
point, I realized that our cab driver had dozed off at the wheel.
What if the police had not set up that barricade on that
night? Our cab, instead of colliding with the stationary (and harmless) barricade,
may have crashed into a truck, or a bus, or another car. It could have mowed
down a pedestrian, or a biker. It could have been in any of these scenarios,
none of them pretty. I was very, very thankful to the universe that night.
However, getting out of this unscathed had its side effects.
After the trip, the incident was forgotten, the usual pressures of office, home
and life took over. Cribbing on tiny problems became a way of life, yet again.
And then life came back to give me the second jolt!
Jolt 2:
Last week, about 9:00 pm. It was raining heavily, and the
traffic was bumper to bumper. I was driving home from office in a car. I
reached near a newly constructed flyover, which is hardly half a kilometer from
my house. Adjacent to the flyover is a narrow road, which runs parallel to the
flyover from below. Whether one drives over the flyover, or on the road below,
the distance and time to reach my place hardly differs.
The flyover and the road are divided by a 3-4 feet stone
divider before they part ways.
That night, as I reached near the flyover, I observed that
it was very crowded, while the road below was nearly empty. So, I decided to
skip the flyover, showed indicator, and turned on to the narrow road.
As the car entered the road, I increased the speed, since
the road was deserted. Unknown to me, in the anticipation to get home, I had
taken a more-than-necessary steep turn, resulting in the rear left tire of the
car bumping against the road divider. As I sped on, I felt a crunch of the tire
hitting the divider, followed by sudden tilt of the car.
I suddenly had a very sick feeling in my stomach when I realized
that the car was now running on only its right-side wheels! The left side of
the car had completely come off the ground and was tilting to the right side at
an alarming rate.
At that time, seatbelts I was wearing made a life and death
difference. If not for seatbelts, I don’t know how and where I would be flung.
As I braced for the coming impact, much to my relief, the car suddenly tilted
left and hit the asphalt extremely hard, completely jolting me inside and out.
Just as I had entered the road, the car had hit a railing on the right side, killing
the momentum of the tilt to the right side.
As the car hit the road, the front left tire burst with a
bang, and it suddenly stopped. The whole ordeal must have taken less than five
seconds, but it was enough to shake me to the core.
A crowd had gathered by then. People helped me get out and
stand on my very shaky legs. After confirming that all my parts were still
present where they are supposed to be, I was extremely relieved to know that no
one else was hurt either.
Then the head took over, and I checked the car. The
suspension was damaged and the tire (and alloy wheel) were beyond repair. There
was no way anyone would be able to drive it. So I called the toe service and
had it delivered to the garage. By the time the toe vehicle drove away, and the
paperwork was done, it was midnight.
I came home completely exhausted, physically as well as
mentally. But I was happy to be alive, and in one piece. It took me more than
two hours to fall asleep even after so much exhaustion.
I woke up refreshed the next day, yet again thankful to the
universe.
I don’t know why, but all the problems, pressures and
stresses of life suddenly felt insignificant now!
